Walid al-Musalh - Baghdad

It was a day of stagnation and laziness, in which the day after Christmas 2018 was interrupted. The dormitory filled the hospital, doctors and nurses alternating at night inspecting the sick family here and there in the medical city of Baghdad's Kadhimiya district.

The room was shrouded in confusion as the fire broke out on the second floor of the hospital, with a small storage room for medical supplies. The atmosphere was filled with heat, smoke and panic.

Not far from the unknown fire, the hall of preterm infants and newborns, 19 children with their own bodies, has no way to survive and the danger is just around the corner.

Avoid disaster
Resident doctor Aseel Ahmed, 29, refuses to leave with the rest of the evacuees, and is escorted by one of her companions through the corridor leading to the pre-dawn room with determination and unwavering composure.

Carrying the children and her colleague in batches and exiting the roof of the building before smoke escapes into the hallway, where another doctor receives them through the emergency ladder to the rest of the crew abroad.

Breathing minutes prevented the disaster, the icon was a doctor Asil, a bunker with a friendly smile describing Aseel that she did not do commendable duty and responsibility, by virtue of her human vocation. "This incident taught me to be a human being before becoming a doctor."

The director of the medical city in Kadhimiya, Abdel Rahman Ismail, said confidently, "We were not let down by anyone who gave what he had, even the service worker and the oxygen officer, with their enthusiasm we managed to save the children in ten minutes."

"We feel sorry before others and we feel the suffering of our patients," he said, speaking to Al Jazeera Net.

Cool and peaceful
"The hands and jealousy of Iraq has made the fire cold and peaceful for our children and we have the ability to save them. We have a civil defense plan and an integrated management system from the top of the institution to the lowest," said Ahmed al-Issawi, head of the children's department.

After the rescue operation is completed, one of the infants and his condition are transferred to the child hospital in Mansour district with one of the nurses who stayed with him until the next morning after his condition stabilized, while his family knows nothing about him.

Abu Hussein, the father of the missing child reveals the first reaction after knowing the place of accommodation for the island Net "I could not believe that my son is living and can feel my hands again, I did not have the custody of my tears, thanks to those who returned to me.

An incident that brought to mind similar incidents of time, many victims of which have not been revealed so far, such as the fire of the Alawi Children's Hospital and Yarmouk Hospital in Baghdad.

However, the incident of the medical city in Kadhimiya passed without victims and gave the answer to the answer that the humanity of those who are medical or other, not sold in the shops of Attarine, but self-generated and translated into action.

Saving children in this hospital may have restored the gloomy picture of patients and their families, and opened a small niche in the wall of despair.
