"Outraged by the blatant lawlessness of the American Themis ... in the midst of paranoid Russophobia in the United States," the Russian diplomatic mission said on Facebook.

The embassy stressed that Butina became a political prisoner and a “victim of a provocation by the US special services”.

“Under false accusations ... American justice forced the Russian woman to make a self-contract. She was threatened with long terms of imprisonment and held in unacceptably harsh prison conditions, ”the department said.

Russian diplomats called on the US authorities to immediately release Butin and promised to continue to provide the Russian woman with the necessary assistance in legal matters.

Earlier, Russian Ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova announced the politicization of the verdict of the American court against Butina.

The Russian woman was detained in July 2018 on suspicion of "working for Russia as an agent." She made a deal with the investigation and pleaded guilty to conspiring to work illegally on the Russian government.
