In a related context, the African Union appointed Mohamed Hassan Ould Labbat, political adviser to the President of the Commission of the Union, a special envoy to Sudan.

Al-Jazeera has learned from private diplomatic sources that the African envoy will start work soon.

Observers believe that the appointment of a high-level official shows the AU's interest in the situation in Sudan, which is witnessing regional tensions that could threaten peace on the continent.

The envoy will be responsible for monitoring the Sudan issue and a reference for the African Union to communicate with the concerned parties locally, regionally and in this regard.
