In Mali, a military base has been attacked. Eleven soldiers died. The town in the city of Guiré in the center of the country had been raided early Sunday morning, said the Ministry of Defense of the West African crisis state. Who is responsible for the attack is therefore not yet clear.

Several soldiers were also injured. The army sent reinforcements to the region.

A representative of the security forces told AFP that the attackers had come from the Wagadou forest on motorcycles and pickup trucks. The forest has been a retreat for Islamist groups for years. They had burned some vehicles, others had taken. A local resident said he had heard shots. The soldiers were surprised by the attack.

Time and again target of attacks

In Mali, both native and foreign soldiers are repeatedly targeted for attacks. It was not until Saturday that an UN blue helmet soldier was killed in an explosive attack in the center of the country. Four others were injured.

The West African Mali has been a staging area for Islamist groups since 2012, who then took control of the north of the country.

The former colonial power France intervened militarily in 2013 and pushed back the Islamists. But despite the presence of thousands of international soldiers, instability continues to prevail. In Mali, the Bundeswehr is in action, she participates, among others, in the UN mission Minusma.

Mali is one of the ten poorest countries in the world, with a population of just over 18 million, according to a UN index. Recently, the Prime Minister of Mali and his ministers submitted their resignations. One reason was not formally named - last, however, had the criticism of the government massively increased.
