Earlier, the UN General Assembly on the report of the First Committee adopted three Russian documents: the resolutions “Non-placement of the first weapons in space” and “Measures to ensure transparency and confidence-building in space activities” (MTDC), as well as a procedural decision “Further practical measures to prevent an arms race in outer space ”(PGVK).
The Foreign Ministry noted that “this time, for the first time, countries such as Australia, Great Britain, Hungary and France completely united with the United States, which traditionally oppose any initiatives on the FIRC.”
“Another alarming signal was the destruction of Washington’s conservative consensus on the joint resolution on MTDC, which was carefully preserved in recent years. We regard the dramatic change in Washington’s position on this document and the transition from its highest form of support, co-authorship, to “against” voting as another vivid demonstration of Washington’s focus on dismantling the modern arms control and non-proliferation system and hindering any positive steps in this area. ” - added to the MFA.
Earlier, former USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev, in an article for Time, stated that the world is currently "on the verge of a new arms race."
