Juan Guaido wants to return to Caracas on Monday. The self-proclaimed Venezuelan president is threatened with arrest on his return to Venezuela. He had left the country despite a court order. He also claims to have received threats. Family members were also threatened, such as being detained.

Guaido is currently in Brazil. There he met with right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro and diplomats from various EU countries to build diplomatic pressure against incumbent President Nicolas Maduro. He called for the continuation of economic sanctions against the Maduro government. He also said that there was no chance of dialogue with Maduro, without elections as a basic requirement. Bolsonaro assured Guaido his full support.

At the end of January, several European states, Maduro, who plunged their country into a severe economic crisis, had been forced to call new elections within a week. The head of state had rejected that. Many states then recognized Guaido as Transitional President.
