Israel today released a member of the Palestinian parliament and prominent political activist Khaleda Jarrar, about 20 months after her arrest.

Members of her family said that the Israeli authorities released Jarrar at a checkpoint north of Jenin.

She was expected to be released at noon, but her family and friends say he was released earlier to avoid her reception as a hero.

The Israeli authorities arrested Jarrar, 56, on 2 July 2017 from her home in Ramallah and has been in administrative detention since then without charge or trial.

Jarrar, a member of the Palestinian parliament since 2006 from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, is married and has three children.

"After 20 months of Israeli captivity, Khaleda has become a free tractor," said Hanan Ashrawi, a senior member of the Palestine Liberation Organization.
