Human Rights Watch and the International Commission of Jurists have confirmed that Egypt's proposed constitutional amendments support authoritarian rule and demanded that the Egyptian authorities withdraw it.

They added that these amendments undermine the independence of the Egyptian judiciary and expand the military's authority in political life.

Michael Bigg, deputy director of the Middle East and North Africa division at Human Rights Watch, said the amendments were aimed at "smashing Egyptian aspirations to live in dignity and under the rule of law."

The authorities must "immediately stop" their actions of hiding opponents and oppressing peaceful critics, with a view to passing those amendments by all means.
