Former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton advises EU countries to curb immigration to Europe. That's the only way they could tackle the growing threat posed by right-wing populists, she told Britain's Guardian.

"I think Europe needs to get a grip on migration, because it has kindled the fire," Clinton said.

The Democrat also praises Chancellor Angela Merkel for her generosity. At the same time, however, Clinton described migration as the cause of Donald Trump's electoral success in the US and the vote of the British for Brexit. The immigration would have led to the decision of the voters.

"I admire the generous and compassionate approach," she told the Guardian. "But I think that you can say that Europe has done its part and now has to send a very clear message." The EU countries should make it clear that they could not "continue to provide shelter and support".

However, since 2015, the migration numbers have fallen sharply. According to recent forecasts, there were as few illegal border crossings in 2013 as in the EU, Frontex said on Wednesday in Warsaw.
