In France, the first fines for street harassment will be effective in the autumn. This was announced Monday Marlene Schiappa, the Secretary of State for Equality between women and men. She reacted to a new case of harassment revealed in a video posted on social networks by a young woman assaulted in Paris last week. Marie filed a complaint and the video of her assault made the rounds of social networks arousing a strong emotion.

These are images from the video surveillance camera of a terrace of a Parisian bar. They show Marie, a young student, bothered by a man. The gestures and remarks of the individual are obscene. The young woman is outraged. " I answered him by saying dryly, ' ' your mouth, '' " she will testify later. The stalker does not like, he turns around, grabs an ashtray on a table, throws it in the direction of Mary and then hits her violently in the face. After he disappears but everything is filmed.

Marlène Schiappa today invites witnesses of this aggression to come forward and promises to ensure that the new law against gender and sexual violence to be voted on this week is implemented on a daily basis.

While the current law sanctions of course all physical aggression, this new text will act upstream. It will be forbidden to annoy, follow and threaten a woman. Fines can range from 90 to 750 euros.
