Jean-Claude Romand, during his judgment, in Bourg-en-Bresse, June 25, 1996. Philippe DESMAZES / AFP

After 26 years in prison, Jean-Claude Romand, the life-long WHO doctor for life for killing his wife, two children and parents, was granted parole on Thursday and is expected to be released from prison before the summer. He had been sentenced to life in 1996, but had been released since 2015 after serving a 22-year lock-in period.

Jean-Claude Romand's life is one of an extraordinary criminal career, that of a pathological liar. After having hidden from his relatives his failure in the medical contest, he lied to his entourage for years.

Married with two children, he claimed to be a medical researcher at the World Health Organization in Switzerland. But he lived by conquering relatives and friends, until in 1993 his deception was discovered.

He kills his wife, his two children, his parents and tries to commit suicide.

This appalling story will inspire literature and cinema ....

At the end of this period, the convict will be subjected for a period of ten years to measures of assistance and control. The false doctor, aged 65, will also abstain from contacting the victims and the civil parties and will not have to go to the crime scene in the east of France.
