One of the two men arrested on charges of spying for the United Arab Emirates was found hanged in his cell in Silvary prison, northwest of Istanbul, prosecutors said.

The Turkish prosecutor said on Monday in a statement that the detainee Zaki YM Hassan was found hanging on the door of the bathroom in his solitary cell, at 10:22 pm Sunday local time. She added that one of the prison staff was distributing food to the prisoners when he saw Hassan Mahnouka.

According to the statement, the staff member immediately informed the prison officials, the relevant authorities began to investigate, and the body of the man was examined in the forensic department in Istanbul.

The Turkish media reported that the detainee used his trousers to put an end to his life, adding that the other detainee on charges of spying for Abu Dhabi - named Samih Shaaban - okay.

The Turkish authorities arrested them on April 19, and ordered a court to detain them under investigation on charges of "political espionage and military" and "international espionage."

Turkish media said the two were Palestinian and had Palestinian passports, and that they were connected to the dismissed leader of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fatah), Mohammed Dahlan, who lives in the UAE.

The Anatolian news agency quoted security sources as saying that the authorities were investigating whether these two individuals were linked to the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside his consulate in Istanbul in October 2018.
