On the night of August 8, 2008, Georgia bombarded the capital of South Ossetia, Tskhinval, by attempting to establish control over the republic. Within a few days, the South Ossetian military formations, together with Russian troops that were introduced into the region as part of the peacekeeping operation forcing Georgia to peace, drove out Georgian troops from the territory of South Ossetia. Georgian armed formations were also driven out of the Kodori Gorge in Abkhazia.
