According to sources in the Turkish presidency, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan telephoned US President Donald Trump to discuss bilateral and regional issues.

Al-Jazeera quoted Turkish sources as saying Erdogan had proposed to Trump to form a working group on the purchase of Turkey's S-400 Russian missile system.

Erdogan also discussed with Trump the developments of the Syrian file and cooperation in combating terrorism.

On bilateral issues, Erdogan and Trump reiterated the aim of increasing bilateral trade volume to 75 billion dollars annually.

Erdogan has said more than once that Turkey will not back down from the deal to buy Russian surface-to-air missile system "S400", despite the increasing pressure from Washington.

"No one can demand that we give up, this is our sovereign right," he said this month in Moscow next to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. In the meantime, Putin considered that the delivery of the S-400 missiles to Turkey is a national priority.

The deal has raised tensions with the United States, which says that Turkey, a NATO ally, should not buy the missiles from Russia's adversary and that the deal negatively affects Turkey's role in the F-35 fighter program.
