Jordan's former parliament speaker and prominent Islamic leader Abdul Latif Arabiyat died Friday in the Jordanian capital of Amman while attending Friday prayers.

The Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan - on its Facebook page - the death of Arab women while attending the Friday sermon and sermon at the mosque of Umm al-Ola in the suburb of Rashid (west of Amman).

Arabiyat, 85, presided over three rounds of parliament from 1990 to 1993 and was a member of the House of Elders from 1993 to 1997.

The Islamic Action Front (IAF) headed the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood in the kingdom between 1998 and 2002.

He was born in 1933 in Salt, and holds a PhD in Education from the University of Texas in 1974. The late King Hussein Bin Talal granted him the title of Excellency, although he did not receive any ministerial portfolios.

He was also a member of the Royal Committee of the National Charter, which was formed by King Hussein in 1990.

King Abdullah II appointed him as a member of the Royal Commission for the National Agenda in 2005.
