According to the government, initial investigations into the devastating attacks in Sri Lanka with at least 310 deaths indicate a "retaliation" for the attack on two mosques in New Zealand. "Preliminary investigations have revealed that what happened in Sri Lanka was retaliation for the attack on Muslims in Christchurch," said Deputy Defense Minister Ruwan Wijewardene in parliament.

An Australian right-wing extremist killed 50 people in Christchurch in mid-March. In Sri Lanka, assassins detonated explosives at eight locations on Easter Sunday. It killed 310 people, there were more than 500 injured. Among the more than 30 foreigners killed is a German-American, as the Foreign Office announced.

Wijewardene blamed two Islamist groups for the attacks. One of them is the group National Thowheeth Jama'ath (NTJ). The government in Sri Lanka is convinced that the attacks could only be perpetrated with the support of an international network.
