The Constitutional Council announced Thursday the censorship of an article emblematic of the law "anti-breakers" on the administrative prohibitions to demonstrate. Jacques DEMARTHON / AFP

The decision was eagerly awaited. The Constitutional Council is censoring article 3 of the "anti-thugs" law, launched in response to the violence during the "yellow vests" demonstrations, considering that it infringed the freedom of expression.

Even if this censorship remains partial, it is nonetheless a snub for the government. The flagship article of the proposed law gave the administrative authority the power to prohibit demonstrations anyone presenting a "threat of special gravity for public order."

What cheers the political opposition. Jean-Luc Mélenchon only took a few minutes to react. On Twitter, the leader of the insubordinate France (LFI), among the most critical on the text, immediately welcomes the censorship of Article 3. " We do not loose anything and it pays, " he writes in concert - for once - with the Socialist Party, which had also denounced a liberticidal disposition.

Following our joint referral with PC and PS, the Constitutional Council censors Article 3 of the anti-rioters law providing for the administrative prohibition to demonstrate! We do not let go and it pays.

At the antipodes, the right. And for good reason: it is a text from the ranks of the Republicans that the government has taken to build the bill.

Defender of the text, the deputy Eric Ciotti regrets " a decapitated law (..) emptied of its substance " before attacking " a president who must leave the poison of" at the same time "if he wants to maintain the republican order ". An attack on Emmanuel Macron, because it is the president who decided to seize the Constitutional Council.

By abolishing the prohibition to protest the Constitutional Council emptied of its substance the law anti-breakers which is found beheaded. #Macron, who himself seized the Constitutional Council must leave the poison of "at the same time" if he wants to maintain the republican order!

In response to criticism from the opposition, but also from its own majority, fifty or so marchers have abstained. No question of putting oil back on the fire. Several of them are satisfied this Thursday evening to greet again the presidential initiative to seize the Constitutional Council.

The Elysee took note of the decision of the Constitutional Council and recalls that Emmanuel Macron had seized "the Sages" to respond to " debate and questioning " caused by the text.
