The artwork of the former South African president, "The Cell Door, Robben Island," will be auctioned on Thursday, May 2 in New York.

The Cell Door, Robben Island was made in 2002 and represents the gateway to Nelson Mandela's cell on Robben Island, where the hero of the struggle against apartheid was held for 18 years. It is estimated between 60,000 and 90,000 euros and must be auctioned this Thursday, May 2 in New York.

Giles Peppiatt, director of African art at the Bonhams auction house, looks back on the features of this first work sold at the auction of the former Nobel Peace Prize.

It was a very personal opener for him. Nelson Mandela kept it until his death, unlike his other works, which were sold by his foundation.
