“The sentence against Butina is unambiguously the result of a political order. There were no legal grounds not only to condemn Butin, but even to bring charges against her. The judge who passed the verdict said that this was an unprecedented case for the United States, ”the lawyer said.
According to him, Butina should appeal this sentence.
“There are certain prospects that it will be canceled at the level of the Supreme Court,” he said.
Earlier, a US court sentenced Butin to 18 months in prison for "conspiring to work illegally for the Russian government."
The Russian woman was detained in July 2018 on suspicion of "working for Russia as an agent." She made a deal with the investigation and pleaded guilty to conspiring to work illegally on the Russian government.
