“Wrong choice of means”: Russian Foreign Ministry condemns US sanctions against Iran

Introducing anti-Iranian sanctions, the United States demonstrates that they want to "subjugate the whole world to their will." So the Russian Foreign Ministry commented on the sanctions imposed by the United States against the Islamic Republic.

"This is done in order to deprive Iran of export earnings, to undermine its economy, because Tehran’s independent policy has not satisfied the United States for a long time, including because it prevents Americans from feeling completely powerful in a strategically important region of the Middle East," on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Recall, on Monday, April 22, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the American side would not extend oil embargo from Iran in early May.

“This decision is aimed at reducing the export of Iranian oil to zero, depriving the Iranian regime of the main source of income,” said Pompeo. “The decision was made after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was added to the list of foreign terrorist organizations, which demonstrates the US commitment to destroying the Iranian terrorist network and changing the malicious behavior of the Iranian regime.”

Note that the exceptions concerned eight countries - China, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, India, Italy and Greece. They are valid until May 2 of this year. The US sanctions themselves are justified by the fact that Iran allegedly did not stop the nuclear program.

So, in 2015, Iran made a nuclear deal with Russia, the United States, China, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. According to the agreement, called the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan, Tehran refused the nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of the sanction.

However, in May 2018, US President Donald Trump announced his withdrawal from the nuclear deal, since, according to Washington, Tehran did not fulfill its conditions. At the same time, the other participants in the transaction and the IAEA emphasized that Iran fulfills all the conditions.

The Russian Foreign Ministry is convinced that by imposing sanctions, the United States intends to impose its own conditions on Iran. Diplomats stressed that this tactic will not lead to the desired result.

“But the United States clearly made a mistake in choosing the means, if it was decided by the method of economic strangulation, to make Tehran an agreeable negotiator ready for any deals on American terms, by a blow to the living conditions of ordinary Iranians,” the commentary says

The ministry noted that this policy "will not add international prestige to the Americans," since other countries see how US policy is "becoming more and more aggressive and reckless."

“We confirm Russia's continued commitment to the implementation of the FACD. We call upon sensible forces to do everything in their power to ensure the sustainable operation of this unique agreement, through the destruction of which Washington is trying to realize its geopolitical ambitions dangerous for all mankind, ”the Foreign Ministry concluded.

Note that on April 23, Iran adopted a law on retaliatory sanctions. This was reported by Tasnim. According to journalists, the Iranian leadership must oppose the "terrorist activities of the US Armed Forces."

This document is part of a general plan for countering the "hostile conspiracies" of the United States, the agency stressed. Earlier, the Supreme National Security Council of Iran (VSNB) proposed a strategy consisting of 14 points. According to the agency Mehr, all provisions of the document were adopted.

Thus, according to this plan, the Central Command of the US Armed Forces (CENTCOM) is recognized as a terrorist organization, while the United States itself is recognized as a “state sponsor of terrorism”.

The document makes it possible to impose sanctions against countries and people who cooperate with CENTCOM. And people and organizations that continue to maintain relations with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps will receive protection from Tehran "from possible legal and spiritual harm."

The government of the Islamic Republic, among other things, will have to cooperate with international organizations, as well as conduct bilateral and multilateral negotiations with other countries to neutralize these measures.
