The mayor of the Polish city of Gdansk, Pavel Adamovich, died in a hospital from stab wounds. This was reported at the University Clinical Center, which the mayor received after the attack.

“Despite all the efforts, we were unable to save him,” said Tomasz Stefanyak, a hospital doctor.

On January 13, a 27-year-old man was attacked by politicians during a charity event organized by the Large Orchestra of Festive Aid Foundation (WOSP), where money was raised to help medical institutions. He ran onto the stage and struck Adamovich several times with a knife, including in the region of the heart. After that, he shouted into the microphone that he was in prison, being innocent.

The offender was almost immediately detained and interrogated. He was charged with the murder of the mayor of Gdansk. Sources from the Polish state agency PAP reported that the assailant in 2013, along with two accomplices, attacked credit unions and the Bank Credit Agricole. According to the agency, Stefan was then sentenced to five and a half years in prison.

Polske Radio 24 reports that the man got access to the event as an employee of the press. The police are currently establishing the details of his penetration.

The suspect in the murder of the mayor did not admit guilt, said the representative of the Prosecutor's Office of Gdansk Grazina Vavrynyuk. The application for a temporary arrest has been sent to court.

The head of WOSP, Jerzy Ovsjak, announced that he was leaving the post of head of the fund.

Also, the authorities decided to abandon the march against violence and hatred, which was scheduled for January 15. In turn, the mayor of Warsaw decided to declare a three-day mourning: January 15, 16 and 17.

Polish Prime Minister Matuesh Moravetsky spoke with the words of support for Adamovich’s loved ones and noted that the death of the mayor of Gdansk is “a great evil.”

“The murder of Mayor Pavel Adamovich is a huge tragedy for all of us. This is a great evil that causes a curse, a great sadness and grief, ”he wrote on Twitter.

Donald Tusk, the incumbent European Council chairman, also commented on the death of Adamovich.

“Pavel Adamovich, the mayor of Gdansk, a representative of solidarity and freedom, a European, my good friend was killed. Rest in peace, ”he wrote on his Twitter.

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland, in connection with the death of the mayor, said that there is no place for violence in a democratic society.

“I am deeply saddened to learn that the mayor of Gdansk Pavel Adamovich died after a terrible knife attack at a charity event last night,” RIA Novosti quotes Jagland’s statement.

The victim was a friend of the Kaliningrad region, said the governor of the region, Anton Alikhanov.

“I think it was a friend of the Kaliningrad region. I personally once again want to express my condolences to the family of Mr. Adamovich, he was a good man, for a very long time headed Gdansk. We knew him personally, I regret about this loss, ”Alikhanov said in an interview with journalists.
