Coronavirus: patient in North Rhine-Westphalia in critical condition

Two Covid-19 patients are treated in clinics in North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg. A US soldier has contracted the virus in South Korea.

In two German states, Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia, infections with the novel corona virus have been detected for the first time. The state of the patient in North Rhine-Westphalia was critical, according to the authorities. It was to be brought from a hospital in Erkelenz to the University Clinic in Düsseldorf on Tuesday evening. The patient in Baden-Württemberg, a 25-year-old from the Göppingen district, was ill with flu-like symptoms. He should be taken to a clinic and housed and treated in isolation. Further information on the respective cases was announced for Wednesday.

According to the dpa news agency, the patient in North Rhine-Westphalia is in his mid-40s and has had a previous medical condition. His wife was also treated with symptoms of a viral disease inpatient, local authorities said. Her condition is currently stable. It has not yet been determined whether she too is infected with the Sars CoV-2 pathogen.

Heinsberg district closes schools

According to the district administrator there, Stephan Pusch, the man had contact with an acquaintance who had been in China recently on business. The Aachener Zeitung reported . At first, Pusch could not say whether this man had also received treatment.

According to the authorities, the sick person in Baden-Württemberg probably got infected in Milan on a trip to Italy. Numerous Covid-19 cases have recently been noticed in Lombardy, Italy is currently the country with the most documented cases in Europe.

In the district of Heinsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia, schools, day-care centers and the district administration will remain closed on Wednesday, as a spokesman for the district announced. At the moment, there are also plans to suspend local public transport. A crisis team was set up in the district. They are in close contact with the Ministry of Health in Düsseldorf. The health department is currently intensively investigating all possible contact persons.

Experts had assumed that there could have been other infection chains in European countries for a long time that nobody suspects - including Germany. "At some point it will likely happen that unnoticed infections are suddenly noticed," said Berlin-based virologist Christian Drosten recently.

US soldier infected

According to an analysis presented by China's health authority, the vast majority of cases - more than 80 percent - show only mild symptoms. Almost 14 percent of those affected develop severe symptoms such as shortness of breath, and almost 5 percent of life-threatening effects such as respiratory arrest, septic shock or multi-organ failure. There is no special therapy for Covid-19. Seriously ill patients are treated symptomatically: with antipyretic agents and sometimes mechanical ventilation.

In South Korea there was a first confirmed coronavirus infection in a US soldier stationed there. A military stationed at Camp Carroll base tested positive for the pathogen, according to the command of the US armed forces in South Korea. The man was now in quarantine in his apartment outside the base. Camp Carroll is located 30 kilometers north of the city of Daegu, the center of the epidemic in South Korea. The official number of infections in the country rose by a further 169 cases to a total of 1,146 by Wednesday. The South Korean authorities also announced an eleventh death from the corona virus.

South Korea is the country most affected by the epidemic outside of China. China reported an increase in infections by 406 cases. The day before there had been 508 new cases. The total number of sick people is now 78,064. The death toll increased by 52, after 71 the day before to 2,715 people.
