The largest opposition Republican People's Party succeeded in significantly expanding the scope of its local influence. The Justice and Development Party retreated to 24 out of the 39 municipalities it had won in the last elections.

The participation rate in the elections reached 78.5%, which is the lowest participation rate since the 1970s. The opposition candidate in Istanbul and the current mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, received 51.9% of the votes, compared to 39.6% for the People's Alliance candidate, Murat Kurum.
