Half of the world's lakes and reservoirs are losing water, according to a new study published in the journal Science. The study largely attributes the trend to climate change and excessive human use.

The authors of the study call for more control and monitoring, especially for smaller lakes. They also stress the importance of preventive measures, such as transferring water to another lake if the threshold of a lake reaches a critical level, and taking care of the lake's water quality at the same time."Lakes are endangered globally, and that has broad implications," says Balaji Rajagopalan.
