The U.S. State Department has approved the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey.

The deal includes an upgrade of Turkey's Link-16 communications system. The link is used to communicate between aircraft, helicopters, ships and ground forces. Turkey is a member of the NATO military alliance, but has not yet been given permission to join the alliance. The move is a response to Turkey's refusal to sign up to the NATO-led anti-terror campaign in Syria. The U.N. Security Council is expected to approve the deal in the coming days.
