Venezuela passes law affirming its sovereignty over Essequibo, a province of Guyana. Guyana, which administers it, denounced on Friday a “flagrant… violation” of its sovereignty.

The law, unanimously approved in plenary session on Thursday March 21, was submitted to the Supreme Court, which must validate its constitutionality. Some 125,000 people, or a fifth ofGuyana's population, live in Es sequibo, which covers two-thirds of the country's land area.
