Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin on Tuesday asked prefects to ban all ultra-right demonstrations. But this request may be difficult to implement in reality because of several parameters.

In France, the freedom to demonstrate is the rule, and restriction is the exception. When a prefect issues a ban at the request of the Minister of the Interior, the organizers may file an appeal. Ultimately, it is up to the administrative judge to assess the legality of this prohibition. It may be justified, in particular where it is based on risks of serious disturbance of public order.
