Passengers at a U.S. airport were surprised by an obese woman climbing on a baggage scale to check her weight.

The airline then decided whether to allow her to board or prevent her from doing so. One passenger said: "It's a very small plane so they needed our weight to take off for safety reasons" The Federal Aviation Administration said weighing passengers before boarding can help ensure that the plane is not overloaded. The FAA advises that the weight of each passenger should be estimated before boarding.
