On March 31, 1959, the Dalai Lama arrived in India, with at least 80,000 Tibetans in his wake. The exile of the 88-year-old Buddhist spiritual leader of the Tibetans lasts until today.

Many Tibetans fear that Beijing will appoint its own Dalai Lama in a bid to strengthen its control over Tibet. The Dalai Lama has always embodied resistance to China's annexation and brutal control.
