The U.S. House of Representatives passes a $1.2 trillion budget to avoid a government shutdown.

The budget will keep some federal government agencies operating until the end of fiscal year 2024, without shutting down at midnight on the 22nd due to running out of funds. Republican House Speaker Johnson compromised too much with the Democrats to reach the budget bill, conservative members of the House said. The defense budget increased by 3% compared with the previous fiscal year, and the non-defense budget remained the same.
