Mauritania is witnessing successive withdrawals of the opposition and its accession to power. This comes ahead of the presidential elections.

Observers see the opposition's withdrawal as a strength to the authorities and a weakness to society. The wave of withdrawals began sweeping the opposition during the era of former President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz. The most notable of them was in 2019, prior to the election of the current Mauritanian president, when groups came out in support of the “National Consensus” candidate.
