Vladimir Kara-Murza has been in pre-trial detention since April 2022. He was convicted of "high treason", spreading "false information" about the Russian military and illegal work on behalf of an "undesirable" organization.

The verdict drew condemnation from many Western countries and international organizations. The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights called on "the Russian authorities to release him without delay" The British government also denounced the "politically motivated verdict" and demanded his "immediate release"
