The long-violent region has reached a tipping point in 2024, with fighting escalating. The United Nations estimates that more than 7.1 million people have been displaced within the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Disturbances caused by fighting and displacement have affected food production and distribution. More than 6 million people in the east of the republic face acute food insecurity, meaning they are unable to meet their daily food needs. Basic medical supplies are often scarce, and outbreaks of diseases such as measles and cholera pose a major threat.
