Thaksin Shinawatra, who ruled Thailand from 2001 to 2006, will be released on parole after six months in detention. The 74-year-old billionaire "is included in the group of prisoners (released) in critical condition or aged over 70", Tawee Sodsong told journalists.

He returned to the kingdom in August after fifteen years of exile to escape several convictions for corruption and abuse of power. The former Prime Minister is also the subject of lese majeste charges for comments made in 2015.
