Taiwan's next vice president, Xiao, will visit Washington this week, US newspaper reports. It is reported that he may meet with American officials, but he is expected to refrain from making any notable remarks to avoid unduly provoking China.

Ms. Xiao was stationed in Washington as a representative of the Tsai Ing-wen administration until last November, when she became the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's candidate for vice president. The Chinese government, which claims that ``Taiwan is part of China,'' is certain to express dissatisfaction with the United States accepting a visit from Mr. Xiao.
