A year ago, a devastating earthquake in Turkey left tens of thousands dead. Relatives gathered in the city center of Antakya to remember the victims.

Politicians were met with anger at the memorial event. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was expected in Kahramanmaraş later on Tuesday, where a similar memorial event took place. According to new figures, the earthquake killed 53,537 people in Turkey and destroyed almost 39,000 houses. It was the deadliest earthquake in the world since 1970, when a tremor in Peru killed 67,000 people.
