The regions of eastern Syria are considered the country's largest economic reservoir, including Deir ez-Zor Governorate. Most of the governorate's residents work in agriculture, as the percentage of farmers reached about 43% of the population in the 2004 census.

After the outbreak of the revolution in March 2011, the agricultural sector, like other sectors, began to decline, especially in recent years. The situation continues to deteriorate due to the spread of the phenomenon of salinization that has affected agricultural lands.
