It is not clear who is responsible for the attacks. Traces point to Ukraine. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 highlighted Europe's dependence on Russian natural gas. Germany in particular was dependent on cheap imports from Russia. Until deliveries stopped, Russia pumped natural gas from Siberia to Germany and other European countries through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline. Nord Stream 2 was not put into operation because of the Russian attack on Ukraine.
