In 2024, around half of the world's population will be called to vote. The absolute number of democracies has increased significantly since the late 1940s.

At its peak in 2009, 44 countries were considered liberal democracies. In 2022, the value reached its lowest level in 27 years. At the same time, the number of autocracies is increasing. It is possible that elections this year will cause setbacks in global democratic progress - for example, if anti-democratic forces in the USA or Germany triumph.
