Under its former president, Donald Trump, in December 2017, the United States launched a path to transfer embassies from Tel Aviv to the occupied city of Jerusalem. Only 4 countries followed suit: Guatemala, Kosovo, and Honduras, the most recent of which was Argentina last month.

In July 1980, the Israeli Knesset approved a decision to annex Jerusalem, both its eastern and western parts, and consider it the eternal and unified capital of Israel. But a month later the Security Council issued Resolution No. 478 and considered all Israeli measures to change the status of Jerusalem invalid.
