Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula resigned from her position as Parliament Speaker. The 67-year-old is accused of accepting large sums of money from a defense company during her time as defense minister.

A new parliament will be elected on May 29th, which will then appoint a new president. Polls suggest the ANC could lose its absolute majority for the first time since 1994. The new president will be appointed after the general election on May 28th. The election will be the first since 1994, when the ANC won the presidency.
