On the Italian Mediterranean island, the volcano is spewing again. The area of Catania airport is so heavily covered with ash that traffic has stopped.

The Civil Protection declared an orange alert level. Mount Etna, which is about 3300 meters high, is the highest active volcano in Europe. It has been erupting regularly for around 500,000 years and is located on the island of Sicily, in the south of Italy, near the border with Libya. The volcano is not currently visible from the air.
