Pakistan has historically provided the first female prime minister of the Islamic world, but some areas in it witness great opposition to women's participation in political life. The upcoming Pakistani elections, scheduled for Thursday, February 8th, will witness examples of women running for the first time in their regions.

Hindu candidate Saweera Prakash is considered the first woman to run in the general elections for general seats. In the Khyber region, Shakira Shinwari is competing for a general seat, for the Pakistan Parliamentarians’ Insaf Party.
