A group of Republican senators submitted to Congress a bill to withdraw the United States from the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) This is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the statement of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Moscow was suspending its participation in the New START Treaty.

The US State Department said that Washington considers it "legally incorrect" for Russia to suspend its Participation in the NEW START Treaty, which expires at the end of 2014.
