Rwanda commemorates the last genocide of the 20th century. By commemorating the genocide it was subjected to over a period of 100 days, Rwanda seeks to ignite the memory of the Rwandan people.

The country entered into official mourning that lasts a week, during which flags are flown at half-mast and any celebrations stop. On July 6, the Rwanda Patriotic Front took control of Kigali to put an end to the genocide. On that day, the “Interahome” militia affiliated with the ruling Habyarimana party began setting up barricades in the capital.
