Santiago Peña, a 44-year-old economist, totaled 44.99% of the vote, compared to 27.95% for Efrain Alegre. The "anti-system" candidate, Paraguayo Cubas, was in third place with 20.43% at the halfway point of the count.

Sunday's vote took place without major incident, according to Paraguayan police chief Gilberto Fleitas, who at the end of the day reported a few cases of clashes.
