Three fishing vessels have had to be rescued in recent days after pirate attacks. Attacks by Yemeni Houthi rebels have increased since the outbreak of the war in Gaza.

International forces patrolling the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean have returned to the Red Sea, raising fears of an increase in acts of piracy, although their numbers had greatly decreased since 2011 and the establishment of international surveillance. The last rescue operation was launched on January 29, 2024 by an Indian navy vessel to free a fishing boat with 19 Pakistani sailors on board, and arrest around ten pirates.
