Peritonitis is inflammation of the abdominal wall. It can be caused by bacterial infection or by liver disease.

If not treated, it can lead to death. The peritonum is the smooth skin that lines the abdominal cavity. It protects the internal organs from friction with the walls of the abdomen. It also transports nutrients and waste to and from the organs. It is a sign of peritonitis that should be treated with antibiotics or other treatment. It should not be left untreated, especially in the elderly.
