The SPD parliamentary group accuses Justice Minister Marco Buschmann of taking too lax action against child marriages. In March 2023, the Federal Constitutional Court declared the relevant law partially unconstitutional.
The Social Democrats demand that marriages in which one spouse is under 16 years old must remain void. Rights of minors, such as maintenance, should be regulated separately by the legislature, says the SPD deputy chairman of the parliamentary group, Dirk Wiese. The Constitutional Court had asked the federal government to reform the law by the end of June 2024 at the latest.
