Gunmen apparently kidnapped more than 200 children from a school in the northern town of Kuriga in Nigeria on Thursday. Local vigilantes tried to fight off the gunmen but were overwhelmed.

The last major kidnapping of school children in Kaduna was reported in July 2021 when gunmen abducted more than 150 students in a raid. The children were reunited with their families months later after they paid a ransom. The governor in charge promised to work for the release of the students, but did not say how many children were missing.
